Surfing in Sri Lanka Hikkaduwa

This is one of the more famous and developed surf locations in Sri Lanka, and supposedly it can get very crowded here.  The day I went this was not the case.  Hikkaduwa Beach is a great place to base your surf vacation from as there is an abundance of cafes and shopping that your non-surfing companions will enjoy.

Surf

Break Type:  Reef.

Gear: Trunks and rash guard

Ambience:  This is basically a long stretch of beach with reef breaks interspersed throughout.  If one surf spot is too crowded just walk a little down the beach and find another.

Main Surf Spot:  Main Reef - this is the spot I surfed and it was great.  Right in front of Mambo's Surf School.

Link to current conditions:  Magic Seaweed

Logistics

Public Parking:  Just find a patch of dirt close to the beach.

Public Showers:  No.

Public Restrooms:  No.

Transportation:  Do yourself a favor and get a driver.  The streets are very crowded and I don't recommend driving.  Nearest Airport:  Colombo International Airport (CMB)

Alternative Surf Spots

Benny's - this is a reef break further up the road that works well in big surf (over 6ft) - experienced surfers only.

Area

Lodging:  You have many options here.

Food:  There are numerous cafes and bars on the beach - lots to choose from.
